No I can not Just Pray About it….Depression

But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high

Psalms 3:3

Depression is real

Too many times you are told “God is all you need” or “Just pray about it” or “you must not trust God”. People have good intentions but good intentions don’t save lives. Too many people are struggling with thoughts of Depression and no longer wanting to live and it seems like the body of christ has over simplified this MAJOR issue. I was in a church one day and I remember hearing the preacher say “You’re not depressed that just the devil trying to mess with your mind.” DEPRESSION IS REAL. We have to stop telling people what they’re feeling is not real. Don’t get me wrong I put all my trust in the Lord but I also know that he has already put the tools that I need here and to be totally honest the answer is not always a prayer. Sometimes people need to talk to someone.  It is my understanding that there are many things that can cause a person to suffer from depression. Anything from a traumatic experience like abuse, a chemical imbalance, prescription medication,  even child birth. Instead of telling people to “JUST PRAY ABOUT IT” and start being more understanding. Some of the ways I believe we can help someone battling depression are:

  • Know the signs
  • Don’t take it lightly
  • Encourage them to seek professional help
  • If they are telling you something is going on (mentally, physically, or emotionally) LISTEN

I’ve had my own bouts with depression just because of some things that were going on in my life at the time. Luckily for me I had someone I could vent to. Someone to tell me I wasn’t crazy and it all wasn’t just in my head. While for many this may not be enough, it is at least a start. What I don’t understand is why there is such a stigma behind getting treatment for depression. Especially within the black church.  We pray, and pray, and pray, then act like God is a Magician that will just make every bad thought or situation Magically disappear. I remember watching an episode of Family Guy where a kid was sick and the parents didn’t believe in modern medicine. Lois goes on to ask the parents if it’s possible for doctors and modern medicine to be Gods answers to prayers to which the parents of the child reply YES. Her next sentence had me asking where do I need to send my offering; “What’s the point of praying to God if you’re gonna wipe your butt with his answers”. Have you ever took the time to think that you, or psychiatrist, or medical treatments, may be the answer to someones prayer.

To anyone reading this and is battling depression I want to share a few things:

  • It’s not just in your head: Your feelings no matter what they may be are valid
  • There are people who truly care how you feel and want you to be okay
  • You are not alone
  • There is nothing wrong with seeking professional help
  • God Loves you
